As Stellenbosch University (SU) looks ahead to 2026, Rector and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deresh Ramjugernath says the institution will prioritise accountability and meaningful impact. To do so, Ramjugernath said in an interview with Die Matie, “Our focus in 2026 is firmly on action and implementation.”SU’s key priorities for the coming year include strengthening academic excellence, improving people, culture and processes, and expanding partnerships and sustainability. “We must continue positioning Stellenbosch as a university that competes confidently on a global stage while remaining deeply relevant to the needs of South Africa and the African continent,” he said.

Ramjugernath described his broader vision as one that balances high academic standards with inclusivity and opportunity. “My vision is for Stellenbosch University to be a place of both excellence and opportunity,” he said. A major focus in 2026 will be fostering a culture of equitable accountability, where members of the SU community understand both the opportunities available to them and the responsibility they carry in shaping the institution. “Universities succeed when their people are empowered and their processes are efficient,” Ramjugernath said. He adds that aligning people, culture and processes will be the key to turning strategy into real results.

In 2026, student success will remain central to SU’s priorities. Ramjugernath said, “I would like to see continued progress in initiatives that support access, retention and academic achievement, while also ensuring that students graduate equipped with the skills and competencies for a rapidly changing world.” Academically, SU will continue investing in research excellence and interdisciplinary collaboration. “A university of our stature must be both thoughtful and responsive,” he said.

Looking forward, Ramjugernath says that SU will deepen its reputation as one of Africa’s leading research-intensive institutions. This includes expanding partnerships, strengthening global networks and remaining a trusted contributor to South Africa’s development. He said, “Internationally, our strength lies not only in competitiveness, but in collaboration.”

In a message to SU students, Ramjugernath encourages active engagement in university life, urging students to challenge ideas, seek new perspectives and make full use of available opportunities. “Stellenbosch University is a place where your future takes shape, not only through what you study, but through who you become,” he said. “You belong here, and your voice matters.” He concluded by reaffirming SU’s commitment to building an institution that is ambitious, values-driven and focused on creating meaningful societal impact.
