South African-born visual artist Zonia Nel-Scheffer has long captivated audiences with her distinctive paintings which delve into themes of solitude, identity and the human condition. Her work is marked by a sensitivity to emotional nuance and a compelling exploration of inner life, often presenting figures in quiet, contemplative spaces that invite reflection and empathy. Through layered textures, subtle color palettes, and expressive brushwork, Nel-Scheffer creates a sense of intimacy that encourages viewers to engage deeply with the emotions her subjects convey.

One of her recent works, “Wat stadig herstel”, exemplifies this approach. The painting depicts a cracked blue and white porcelain bowl, a peeled orange segment, and a delicate origami crane suspended by a red thread – symbols of fragility, renewal, and transformation. With its meticulous composition and restrained colour scheme, the piece evokes a quiet resilience, reminding viewers of beauty found in imperfection.

This year, Nel-Scheffer brought her creative vision to the Woordfees as part of the Ateljeebesoeke (Studio Visits) program. From 13 to 15 October, visitors were invited to her studio at 28 Jonkershoek Road, Stellenbosch, to experience her artistic process in-person. The program provided a rare opportunity to observe how her ideas evolve on canvas, from initial sketches to finished works, and to engage directly with the artist herself.

Zonia Nel-Scheffer’s presence at Woordfees is a celebration of thoughtful, emotive art that resonates long after one leaves the gallery.
