Maties Equestrian: A hidden gem for horse lovers Cape Derby Chaos: Maties snatch victory in dying seconds Luck o’ the Maties Monday Miles: just for fun

Nestled in the scenic landscapes of Coetzenberg, Stellenbosch University’s (SU) Maties Equestrian offers students a unique opportunity to develop their riding skills while forming a deep connection with horses. Under the guidance of coach Hamilton, an Equestrian expert, this equestrian community has flourished into a thriving hub for riders of all levels.

Equestrian sports are often considered individual disciplines, but coach Hamilton challenges this notion. “You work as a team with a live animal that cannot speak,” she explains. “Horses are intelligent but sometimes unpredictable, requiring patience, intuition, and adaptability.” This dynamic creates a partnership where horse and rider must learn to trust each other, making it one of the most intricate and rewarding sports.

Maties Equestrian caters to all skill levels, from beginners to experienced competitors. The club boasts two dedicated training horses: one suited for advanced skills like dressage and higher jumps, and another providing a solid foundation for novice riders. “If you’re a beginner, we help you develop essential skills, and if you’re more experienced, I will work with you to advance to the next level,” coach Hamilton explains. Riders without personal horses can still progress, although competition heights are limited to 70-80 cm. Those with their horses can train for more advanced levels.

Maties Equestrian actively participates in competitions throughout the year, offering students valuable show experience. Training shows at the yard provide a supportive environment for first-time competitors. “It’s like a home match,” says coach Hamilton. For more advanced riders, the club competes at graded shows at venues like Stellenbosch District Riding Club and Mistico Equestrian Centre. According to coach Hamilton, the year’s highlight is the prestigious Grand Prix, where riders accumulate points across multiple rounds to determine the overall champion.

Ensuring horse welfare is a top priority. “Nutrition is the biggest thing,” emphasises coach Hamilton. Horses follow a tailored diet with high-protein feeds and essential supplements. Regular chiropractic adjustments, dental check-ups, and farrier visits keep them in peak condition. “No hoof, no horse,” she stresses, highlighting the importance of proper hoof care.

While many may assume horseback riding is simple, it is physically and mentally demanding. “You’re using muscles most people don’t even know they have,” Coach Hamilton explains. Core strength, balance, coordination, and endurance are essential. Mentally, riders must stay focused, constantly reading their horse’s behaviour and adjusting their approach. “It’s a sport that challenges both body and mind, making it incredibly rewarding.”

Beyond competition and training, Maties Equestrian fosters a supportive and passionate community. Whether students are starting their equestrian journey, refining their skills, or competing at a high level, the club provides a welcoming environment. For those interested in joining, Coach Hamilton encourages them to visit the yard, meet the horses, and experience the unique world of equestrian sport. “If you have the passion, there’s no better place to be.”
