Stellenbosch University (SU) inaugurated its 13th Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Deresh Ramjugernath, on 1 October. This historical moment brought together university leaders, government officials, students, staff and alumni into SU’s Endler Hall to celebrate the beginning of a new chapter.

Dr. Ronel Retief, SU Registrar, explained in the opening remarks, that Prof. Ramjugernath had already assumed his position in April this year, but that “today marks a ceremonial affirmation of his leadership at the helm of our institution”. The role he is adopting has great responsibility and importance, highlighted in the esteem the guests had for him during the day’s events. This was especially noticeable in the moment where Prof. Ramjugernath was adorned with the ceremonial robe – a mighty applause ringing through the room.

In his inaugural address, Prof. Ramjugernath outlined an ambitious vision for SU – one grounded in academic excellence, inclusivity, and global competitiveness. He noted that he is “only a steward, entrusted, for a time, with the responsibility to shape new and meaningful pathways to a better future for all at our institution”. Looking ahead, the new rector called for innovation in teaching and research – highlighting artificial intelligence, digital learning and interdisciplinary collaboration as essential tools for the future.

With a clear goal to elevate SU into the world’s top 100 universities, Prof. Ramjugernath urged the campus community to embrace collaboration and ambition. However, he did note that the focus of his tenure is not to chase rankings, but rather “[to provide] real solutions to real life problems that would improve the quality of life in communities on a global scale”. He aims to achieve this goal through a relentless pursuit of academic and research excellence, “guided by the challenges of our time”.

Following his inaugural address and a performance by the SU Choir, the rector was felicitated by four esteemed members, namely Prof. Sam Tshehla (Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Strategy, Global and Corporate Affairs), Sonja Roux (Representative of the SU Vice-Chancellor Circle), Prof. Juanita Pienaar (Representative of SU Senate) and Dr. Theo de Jager (President of SU Convocation).

Following the official proceedings, a colourful procession made its way to Coetzenburg Stadium, where the celebrations continued in festive spirit. Guests were treated to a lively programme that included a vibrant musical performance by Jamestown Sounds and a captivating dance showcase by Dance for All. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with refreshments, good food, and cheerful conversations setting the tone for an evening of camaraderie and celebration.

The inauguration was not only a ceremonial welcome, but also a bold statement of intent: SU is pursuing united growth as Prof. Ramjugernath strives “to be adaptable and unmissable”.
