University Sport South Africa (USSA) 2025 was lit up by Stellenbosch University’s (SU) maroon machines, where they came to play, and left with medals, memories, and perhaps a few bruises.

The women’s hockey team played their way to the top of the podium with fierce determination, claiming gold in style. Not far behind, the men’s hockey team kept things slick off the turf, sliding into a solid silver medal finish.

Over on the rugby fields, the men’s team bulldozed their way to second place after their final match against University of Pretoria (Tuks), while the women’s side put up a good fight, finishing fifth. Over in the racket domain, SU’s badminton team delivered the goods with a shiny silver, proving that Maties can smash more than just academic goals. The squash courts were also a busy medal factory where Team A nabbed bronze while Team B claimed silver.

On the basketball courts, the 3×3 plays, the women’s team slam dunked their way to bronze, while the men battled hard and finished a respectable fifth.The Maties 2 netball team also had their moment, clinching the Section B title and proving they’re a team on the rise to watch. 

All in all, the maroon machines kept the pride alive on the turf in USSA 2025 with games fuelled by grit, goals and great vibes. With more International University Sports Federation (FISU) games to come, where several Maties sporting codes will participate, the maroon machines are determined to stay on top of their game. 

Whether finishing first or just short of the podium, every Maties athlete gave it their all.
