“No two days are ever the same,” he says. “It’s a bit like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’ll get.” One moment he assists with registration inquiries, the next he is participating in a faculty meeting or responding to a barrage of emails. “It’s unpredictable, but that’s what makes it exciting,” he says.

Erik’s approach to his work is grounded in one powerful philosophy: listen, help, and believe in students when they need it most. He walked in their shoes, from being nervous, to uncertain, to even discouraged. “I know what it feels like to fail a module and wonder if you’ll make it, that’s why, when a student is struggling, I’m there to remind them they’re not alone,” he says.

Whether it is personal or academic challenges, Erik starts by truly listening. “Students often just need to feel heard. Encouragement can go a long way.” If the problem goes beyond his scope, he guides them to the university’s excellent support services. On academic matters, however, he is in his element and always ready to help.

What brings him the most fulfillment is graduation day. Seeing a student cross the stage and knowing he played a small part in their success. He remembers the ones who nearly gave up but pushed through. “When the students say, ‘Thank you for believing in me,’ that makes it all worthwhile.”

He draws strength from his dedicated team and the thought that someone out there might need him that day. “Even on hard days, being part of a supportive team makes a difference. And so does knowing a student might need someone to believe in them.”

Erik hopes that every student he interacts with walks away feeling truly seen, heard, and supported. “If I can help even one student feel valued and understood, I’ve done what I set out to do, he says.”

To those feeling lost, Erik offers this: “Please speak up. You are not alone, and this moment will not last forever. You are stronger than you think — and even if you do not believe in yourself right now, we do.”

Erik van Zyl may work behind the scenes, but to the students of AgriSciences, he is a steady hand, a reassuring voice, and a firm believer in their potential, right when they need it most.
