There is a new spot in town for lovers of quality baked goods. Nestled on Church Street between Le Grand Domaine Enoteca and Hygge Hygge, Motherdough has officially made their mark in Stellenbosch.

Named after their original sourdough starter, Alfonsina, Motherdough first began as a small bakery in Franschhoek during the 2020 lockdown. As demand for naturally fermented bread grew, the business expanded and they brought their expertise to Stellenbosch in December 2024.

Motherdough takes pride in their commitment to real and healthy baking, thus no preservatives or artificial flavours are added and no shortcuts are taken. Their slogan, #eatproperbread, reflects their dedication to quality products and craftsmanship. Popular menu items include their much-loved cinnabon’s and Milk Tart Bomboloni, according to barista Ethan Scott. The fagottino, an Italian version of the croissant, is also a fan favourite.

It is the perfect go-to café for quality baked goods and great coffee. It is more suited for socialising rather than studying, since there are limited plugs available and no Wi-Fi connection as of yet.

Their opening hours are 07:30 to 16:00 from Monday to Saturday and 08:00 to 15:00 on Sundays, so be sure to visit the café early before the favourites sell out.
