A lively 5km colour run/walk outside Maties Gym was hosted by MatiesSport and the Wimbledon Cluster with support from the gym, on Saturday 27 September. As more than a celebration of fitness, the event carried a deeper purpose: participants donated sanitary products for Grade 11 learners at Kayamandi High School, with some learners even arriving by bus to take part in the fun.
From 07:30, runners and walkers warmed up before setting off at 08:00. The route exploded with colour, music, and laughter as student volunteers managed gazebos, threw colour, and captured the day on camera. “There are ways to take advantage of your time at university, more than just studying. There is a community around you that needs your support,” reflected Sarah Leigh Parish, student volunteer and HC of Aristea. SU’s beloved mascot Pokkel and Wimbledon’s turtle mascot, Wimby, added to the excitement, cheering participants across the finish line.
The event drew a wide mix of people, from eager primary school children to experienced runners and working professionals. For some, it was their first race, and for others, another milestone in a fitness journey. “I am a part-time runner, with an interest in fitness. This was a challenge for myself, as I have never taken part in a run of this scale,” shared Victor Makuska, a Huis de Villiers resident.
The morning closed with a raffle, where winners walked away with prizes including towels, socks, caps, Stanley mugs, Gino’s vouchers, and sports massages. All proceeds from the raffle will go directly to Kayamandi High School. Participants also donated non-perishable food items, which will be distributed by Move4Food, Stellenbosch University’s initiative tackling food insecurity.
The Colour Run proved that sport is about more than health and endurance. It can unite people, inspire generosity, and remind us that every stride has the power to create lasting impact.

What a brilliant idea! Combining a splash of colour with a dash of charity is just the spice life needs. Who knew fundraising could be this much fun? And Pokkel and Wimby adding their own brand of chaos? Perfect! Its high time we all realised university isnt just about hitting the books – some of us need to run (or stumble) for a cause.
