The third term is packed with fun activities, fierce yet friendly rivalries, and cherished traditions that bring university communities together in full force. At Stellenbosch University (SU), Derby Week is not just a sporting event – it is a celebration of residence pride, camaraderie, and unmistakable “gees”, brought to life through cultural events, like debating and riff offs, creative challenges, and spirited fun.

Every derby tells its own unique story. It is the one time of year when no one questions students covered head-to-toe in green, purple, pink, or red paint.

Here’s a closer look at what Derby Week looks like for various SU communities.

Many communities begin Derby Week by serenading others in town, setting the tone with excitement.

Helderberg men’s residence, will face off against Simonsberg in a rivalry that has been a Derby Week tradition since 2010. According to Derby House Committee (HC) member, Schutte Müller, the emphasis is on broad participation and creating an inclusive atmosphere. In a new twist, this year’s Derby will introduce a floating trophy – handcrafted by Müller himself – which will be passed down to future champions. A new point system will also determine a clear overall winner.

According to Simonsberg’s Derby HC members, Seth Nieburg and Sebastian Le Grange, incumbent primaria, their competitive advantage lies in their “all-roundness” and ability to excel in various activities.

Meanwhile, on the women’s side, this year marks the third year Nerina is competing against Monica. According to Nerina’s Derby Committee chairpersons, Juané le Roux and Zenae de Villiers, the previous two years were for fun, but this year the competition is more structured, with an official points system. A highlight on their program is the mixed teams’ hockey match, where Dagbreek and Nerina play versus Monica and Wilgenhof. Nerina challenged their first years to “The Most Purple Nerina” – with some covering themselves from head to toe in purple paint.

Elsewhere on campus, Huis ten Bosch and Lydia have launched a photo scavenger hunt across campus. According to Lydia’s Derby HC member, Jacqueline Swart, Derby Week is about making everyone feel welcome in Lydia – even if you are not the best at a specific activity, “we still love you”. They have also introduced a new dance event: Derby After Dark.

Derby Week continues to stand as a powerful reminder of what makes student life at Stellenbosch truly unforgettable.
