Run It Up was founded with one clear goal: to create more than just a running club. Their mission? To support students on their fitness journeys they offer a space where they feel seen, encouraged, and empowered – and, most importantly, to build a true sense of community. The club meets twice a week on the grass fields of Heemstede – Wednesdays at 17:15 and Saturdays at 08:00 – offering consistent opportunities for connection, growth, and support.

What makes Run It Up special is its inclusivity, as Diba Mbatsha, one of the founders mentioned. There’s no pressure to be fast or experienced; members are free to walk, jog, or run at their own pace. It’s not about competing – it’s about showing up.

Unlike more traditional running clubs that focus primarily on performance, Run It Up emphasizes community. Before and after each run, members are encouraged to stay and socialize. The club’s active WhatsApp groups help keep everyone connected throughout the week, offering encouragement and reminders. By employing these methods, everyone’s fitness journey is not only more fun, but meaningful friendships are fostered.

This community-first approach has had a ripple effect. What began as a handful of ten runners has grown into a vibrant network of almost 175 students who not only move together, but who also uplift and support one another through university life’s ups and downs. Many members have reported improved mental health, boosted confidence, and lasting friendships formed through the club.

“As more people discover the mental clarity and joy that movement brings, Run It Up is here to make sure no one has to do it alone,” said the founders Lukhanyo Nkonzo, Camila Nkhama, Lefa Maimane, Reneilwe Matshediso and Mbatsha.

In a town known for its bustling student life, Run It Up stands out by slowing things down – just enough for students to catch their breath, connect with others, and remind themselves that every step forward – no matter how small – counts.

What starts with a single step can turn into a lifelong passion – especially when you’re not running alone – and with a motto like “We gon’ run it up!”, one can’t help but dust off their running shoes to prepare for the next run.
