There have been a few funky outfits around town over the past few weeks – everything from bridal outfits (Eendrag) to cowboys (Lydia). If you haven’t figured it out by now, it’s House Funds Dance season. Here’s the inside scoop on this fun tradition so that you don’t feel completely out of the loop.
The purpose of House Funds Dance is in the name: it’s to raise money for the residence or Commuter Student Community’s (CSC) House Dance that will be held later in the year. And what better way to do it than by holding another dance? It’s a win-win situation. You get to dress up, have a fun night out and make sure that your House Dance will be one to remember.
First things first – the date! If you’re one of the lucky people who can simply send your boyfriend or girlfriend a WhatsApp with the date and address, this is your night to show off with a cute, co-ordinated outfit (or make your partner wear something ridiculous). To the single people out there, it may take a bit more effort, but it can still be just as fun! Ask one of your friends that you know has other connections at the dance so that you can go as a group or ask someone to set you up with a blind date. Some residences, such as Lydia, even have auctions that potential dates can sign up for, and the highest bid wins the date!
Next up: the outfit! There are some fun themes this year: Oops, wrong event (that’s where the brides come in), rhyme without reason (think chef and ref), tropical bombshell… and the list continues. The five-rand store is your best friend in this department!
Finally, you’re ready for the dance. Get ready for a night of laughter, dancing and guessing the theme of couples’ outfits. Most House Funds Dances are held in clubs such as Dorp, Catwalk and Aandklas, which makes for a relaxed, low-pressure evening with your besties.
Lastly, it is highly recommended to end the night with Moody Blue waffles. A good dose of sugar and stares from strangers – there’s no better combo!
