Cluster spirit, competition and community took centre stage as Rubix and VicMeyr  went head-to-head at this year’s Cluster Fiesta. At the end of the day, Rubix claimed the overall sports victory, whilst VicMeyr was awarded the best gees.

The event brought students together through sport, wellness and social connection, creating an atmosphere filled with energy, support and friendly rivalry. Throughout the day, students competed in a variety of sports such as soccer, netball, volleyball, tennis and chess.

Fast-paced soccer matches saw quick passes and determined defence, while netball and volleyball courts drew loud cheers as teams fought for every point. Tennis rallies stretched on under focused silence before erupting into applause, and even the chess tables carried a quiet intensity as players calculated their next moves.

Benita van Zyl, Serruria’s Residence Head and one of the organisers of the event, states that Cluster Fiesta goes beyond competition. “The purpose is to get our student communities together within the cluster,” she explained, emphasising the importance of community beyond Welcoming. Van Zyl added that the event helps relieve academic stress while promoting wellness, social wellbeing and relationship-building. She also emphasised accessibility, noting that students can participate in various sporting codes without financial barriers.

VicMeyr Cluster Convenor Nabbihun Jacobs, described the event as a reflection of resilience within the community. “We found it quite challenging to get sign-ups, but we ended up pulling up two teams for everything and showed up. Resilience is a major factor in VicMeyr,” she said. Jacobs highlighted the importance of stepping away from academic stress and prioritising both mental and physical health.

Rubix Cluster Convenor Cameron Ethan Fisher, said that the event strengthens unity within the cluster, describing it as an opportunity to relax, rewind and support one another.
